I struggle with proper dialog in which to explain the importance of a photograph. It is not a frustrating struggle but one of continuous search.
Recently I was visiting one of the online photography forum’s and was reading through some of the topics and reply’s. The question was asked: “Why are you a nature photographer.”
It seems almost wrong to mention something so unimportant as television but, these things do not stop with broadcast television. They can be witnessed throughout ones day in almost any social setting.
Art seems to be a galaxy within a universe in which some choose to visit. We try, possibly unknowingly, to understand ourselves through various means.
Photography by it's shear nature seems to struggle in it's distinguishing of these two counter approaches. In the beginning a photograph had but one purpose, to document. This could be a specific time, event, or moment but the purpose was purely documentation. This great grandfather mindset of photography holds firmly to this day. Though it is safe to say the vast majority now expect a photograph to be something more than just a documentary thing. At what point does a photograph cease being documentary and start being subjective? When indeed.
