In one of our Countries great grasslands knows as Buffalo Gap National Grasslands in South Dakota a lone Bison enjoys the peaceful surroundings of a late afternoon. I was fortunate to spend time in the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands in 2020. A vast sweeping prairie that reminded me of home.
Surrounding large portions of the South Dakota Badlands the scenes are filled with amazing landscapes found nowhere else. Times spent exploring backroads encountering prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, and of course bison, are some of the pleasures of this vast and truly unique place.
One begins to understand the importance of shared responsibility when exploring places such as our great grasslands and prairies. Our presence must always work with and help support the native life that has called these places home for thousands of years.
The Buffalo Gap National Grassland is one of 20 National Grasslands. For visitors that enjoy getting away from it all, Buffalo Gap National Grassland hosts an array of unique opportunities to do just that. The National Grasslands contains a surprising diversity of plants and animals and are one of the most extensive, productive ecosystems in the United States. The Buffalo Gap National Grassland is administered by the USDA and encompasses nearly 600,000 acres located in scattered tracts within southwestern South Dakota.
