Down The Road

Photographic Story~

Throughout the distant reaches of our prairie lands small country roads crisscross section by section of open prairies and rolling hills. One can drive for a lifetime and not see all there is to see. Then start over in a different season or even a different day and it would all look new once again. Sunrises, sunsets, plants, and wildlife are ever-changing in our countryside.

In the far reaches of Lyon County Kansas, but not exclusive to, these backroads travel through some of the most beautiful, relaxing lands of the open plains. Slow quiet drives, taking in the sounds of nature and breathing in the fresh air filtered by our great grasslands.

During an early Summer exploration of this area I found myself once again slowly taking in all this place had to offer. It’s not uncommon for me to find a pull-off along a seldom traveled road, park, and just start walking. I have walked miles down roads such as this. Watching Meadowlarks’ flutter up from nearby fields, seeing Redtail Hawks soaring the clean clear skies.

There seems to be nothing special about these places except for the fact that everything is special. Each step along the way one can enjoy the waving grasses and wildflowers from the southerly breeze. In the moments leading up to, during, and after sunset, one can listen to the crickets, cicada, and when lucky, hear and get a glimpse of the nighthawks that make the prairie skies their home.

Venturing down the road is not only enjoyable, it is a privilege to do so. Something that never gets old and can, if one allows, keep us all young at heart.
